ABOUT

For more than 30 years, Superfest has celebrated cutting-edge cinema that portrays disability through a diverse, complex, unabashed and engaging lens. Since it first debuted in a small Los Angeles showcase in 1970 it has become an eagerly anticipated international event.

In 2013, the Paul K. Longmore Institute on Disability at San Francisco State (Longmore) started producing Superfest with LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired. In 2019, after a fruitful partnership, LightHouse moved on from the festival.

Now, in 2024, we are excited to announce that the Longmore Institute is welcoming a new Superfest partner, the San Francisco Disability Cultural Center (DCC). The Longmore Institute and the DCC share a common mission of creating joyful and generative spaces for disability culture and creativity to thrive.

We have grown from a single-day film festival to a robust year-around program that provides community showcases, a virtual and in-person festival that reaches thousands, and groundbreaking panel discussions. Though we’ve expanded and evolved, our core value has stayed true - we will always be rooted in community and prioritize access for disabled filmgoers of all kinds.

You can show your support by making a contribution to Superfest or becoming a sponsor of next year’s festival, learn more here.
